SUMMARY:International Day of Older Persons: Mobilizing Multisectoral Action for Longevity to 2030 and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The world has entered an age of longevity. As people live longer and populations age\, the systems that shape our lives must evolve to keep pace.  \nPopulation ageing is not solely a health or social issue. It has implications across employment\, social protection\, infrastructure\, technology\, financing\, health and care — making it a defining development issue.  \nLooking to 2030 and beyond  \nAs the world enters the second half of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030)\, 2026 is an important moment to reflect on progress\, identify gaps and accelerate action — while considering what needs to continue beyond 2030.  \nTo mark the International Day of Older Persons 2026\, IFA will convene a global virtual dialogue bringing together leaders across sectors to explore how collective action can accelerate progress towards 2030 and help shape the agenda on ageing and longevity beyond 2030.  \nThe conversation will ask:  \nWhat has meaningfully changed during the first half of the Decade?  \nWhere are systems still failing to keep pace with longer lives?  \nWhat needs to be different by 2030 — and what needs to be carried beyond 2030?

SUMMARY:Reframing Healthy Ageing and Long-Term Care Systems in Africa: Strengthening Informal\, Home-Based and Community Care through Integrated Systems Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Pan-Africa Dialogue Series on Ageing and Development: Session 5 \nAfrica is experiencing one of the fastest demographic transitions globally. While the continent remains relatively young\, the absolute number of older persons is increasing rapidly\, often in contexts where health\, social protection and care systems are under-resourced and fragmented. At the same time\, Africa faces an urgent employment challenge\, particularly for women and youth\, alongside widening gender inequalities in unpaid and informal work. \nLong-term care (LTC) needs are already rising due to increased longevity\, non-communicable diseases\, disability\, functional decline and dementia\, yet remain largely invisible within national development\, health and financing frameworks. Across Africa\, long-term care is predominantly provided by families\, communities and informal caregivers\, most of whom are women\, often without recognition\, skills certification\, income security or social protection. This invisibility masks both the economic burden of unpaid care and the missed opportunity to build a skilled care workforce and care economy. \nGlobal and regional frameworks\, including the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA)\, the Doha Political Declaration\, the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030)\, and the African Union Common Position on Long-Term Care and Framework on Family provide a strong policy foundation. However\, many countries lack the tools\, governance models\, financing pathways and implementation guidance to translate these commitments into integrated long-term care systems that simultaneously advance healthy ageing\, gender equality and job creation.

SUMMARY:IFA at the 79th World Health Assembly
DESCRIPTION:At WHA79\, IFA is co-hosting a series of high-level side events that reflect a shared priority: reframing ageing as a lifelong\, cross-sector investment and embedding healthy longevity into health systems\, financing\, and policy frameworks. \nInvesting in Healthy Ageing – A Foundation for Population Health and Well-being \nCo-hosts: France\, Japan\, Thailand\, Republic of Korea\, HelpAge International\, International Federation on Ageing\nTime: Monday\, 18 May\, 13:00\nLocation: Room XI\, Palais des Nations \nThis event aims to identify practical country examples of investing in integrated care\, long-term care and age-friendly environments\, understand how WHO norms and standards can accelerate implementation and scale\, recognize the economic\, health and social returns of investing in healthy ageing\, strengthen cross-country learning and multisectoral collaboration\, and reinforce commitments for the second half of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. \nHealthy Longevity as a Whole-of-Society Life-Course Investment Strategy \nCo-hosts: Qatar\, Finland\, Japan\, World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA)\, World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)\, International Federation on Ageing (IFA)\nTime: Tuesday\, 19 May\, 13:00\nLocation: Salle XVI\, Palais des Nations \nPopulation ageing and rising NCD prevalence represent a significant and growing global burden. Despite substantial policy activity\, responses often remain fragmented across sectors and disease silos. There is a critical need for integrated life course frameworks that address determinants of health\, strengthen prevention ecosystems\, support primary healthcare as an enabler\, and align governance and financing structures. This side event responds to that unmet need by advancing healthy longevity as a cross-government investment model. \nImmunizing Across the Life Course: Supporting Healthy Ageing\, NCD Management\, and System Resilience \nCo-hosts: International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA)\, Global Allergy & Airways Patient Platform (GAAPP)\, International Federation on Ageing (IFA)\nTime: Friday\, 22 May\, 13:00\nLocation: Salle B\, WHO Headquarters \nThe event will explore how life-course immunization can strengthen PHC-led models designed to meet the needs of ageing populations and people living with NCDs. The discussion will highlight how life-course immunization can support healthier ageing\, stable NCD management\, and improved system efficiency at a time of tightening fiscal space and rising service demand. \nIFA welcomes collaboration with governments\, civil society\, academia\, and private sector partners to advance shared priorities on healthy ageing and longevity. SUMMARY:Ageing\, Gender\, Power: Rethinking Women's Health\, Work and Rights Across the Life Course
DESCRIPTION:As populations age worldwide\, a critical question emerges: how can societies better support women across the life course? Societies around the world are ageing rapidly\, reshaping health systems\, labour markets\, care structures and economies. Women are at the centre of this demographic transformation\, yet their experiences across mid and later life remain overlooked. From menopause and health to workforce participation\, caregiving responsibilities\, income security\, and the impacts of ageism and sexism\, these challenges are deeply interconnected but rarely addressed together.
