15th Global Conference on Ageing Registration Now Open

Mark the calendar, the IFA's 15th Global Conference on Ageing will be convened in
Niagara Falls, Canada from 1-3 November, 2020.
Entitled "Rights Matter" the conference will continue to be an international platform driving the agenda of the world's population ageing and engaging delegates from around the world.
The overall program will give focus to the rights of older people while improving our understanding of age-friendly environments, debating the solutions to address inequalities, confronting the reality of ageism, and delving into what it means to enable the functional ability of an older person.

Cognitive impairment, coupled with a rapidly ageing global population is positioned to greatly impact individuals and society. In response to this emerging issue, the IFA and the DaneAge Association are convening the
Copenhagen Summit on Cognitive Reserve: A Public Policy Approach to Brain Health
in Denmark on
24-25 October 2019
. As influencing and shaping age-related policy is a critical component of IFA work, the Summit aims to ensure that the science of cognitive reserve is translated into policies aimed at maximized the functional ability and well-being of older people.

Call for Inputs:
Regarding humanitarian assistance for older persons in situations of risk and emergencies
|
The next annual thematic report by the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons will focus on the topic of older persons in situations of risk and emergencies. The purpose of this report is to help identify causes and implications of inadequate humanitarian assistance for older persons in situations of risk and emergencies and to propose solutions.
The report will be informed by written contributions from civil society organizations as well as the discussions from a
roundtable event
in Geneva that was held in February 2019. Submissions should be sent to

Building a DR Community of Practice
IFA Project Update
|
The Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Barometer Program is working towards a world where people living with diabetes are enabled to maintain their vision health as they age. Led by the IFA as the Secretariat, the Program is driven by the dialogue and pilot projects generated by three Communities of Practice: Patient Education and Empowerment, Guidelines and Protocols, and Coordinated Care.
Advocates for diabetes, vision health, and healthy ageing, as well as healthcare professionals who work with adults with diabetes are invited to join the DR Barometer Communities of Practice. By signing up, members gain access to interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and networking opportunities, online discussions, expert insights, and a library of resources like guidelines and education materials.

Vision Academy

Dr Jane Barratt will join experts in ophthalmic care in Amsterdam this month for the Vision Academy annual meeting. Through their collective expertise, the Vision Academy seeks to provide guidance for best clinical practice in the management of retinal disease, particularly in areas with insufficient conclusive evidence.

The 10th Session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA)
15- 18 April 2019

The IFA will be co-organizing a side event with the Dave Omokaro Foundation on 17 April 2019 entitled
“Independence, Autonomy and Rights of Older Persons in the African Context.”
The objective is to enhance understandings of systemic drivers of older person's vulnerabilities in Africa and highlight the importance of legislative reforms to strengthen their rights. The side event will also serve to galvanize support for a legally binding human rights instrument specifically for older persons among Member States in the African region through the Stakeholder Group on Ageing (SGA) of Africa.

CANADA
Aging and Dying in Prison
|
|
|
On 28 February, the Correctional Investigator of Canada and the Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission released a joint report on the experiences of older individuals in federal custody.
The report, which makes 16 recommendations, highlights the challenges associated with older individuals under federal sentence including management of chronic health conditions, accessibility and accommodation of disability, institutionalization, reintegration barriers, end-of-life care and dying with dignity in prison.
