Dr. Alejandro Bonilla-Garcia

Actuary, MSc, PhD.

 Born in Mexico City and holding dual Mexican and Swiss nationality, Dr. Alejandro Bonilla-Garcia has built a distinguished career focusing on the advancement of retirement systems and social protection. He began his professional journey as an Assistant Actuary at Mexico’s National Statistical Office, later becoming the Deputy Director of the Planning Division of the Mexican Institute of Social Security where he managed actuarial calculations and social security planning.

In 1990, Dr. Bonilla-Garcia joined the International Labour Organization in Geneva, serving in various capacities including Senior Actuary, Deputy Regional Director for the Americas, Policy and Research Coordinator of the Social Protection Sector, and Director of the Social Protection Department. His work emphasized promoting social security schemes and social protection floors and ensuring compliance with international labor standards. He also held prominent positions at the International Social Security Association, including Acting Secretary General.

Currently, Dr. Bonilla-Garcia serves as the Chair of the NGO Committee on Ageing in Geneva and is the Representative to the United Nations in Geneva of the International Federation on Ageing. He remains a Senior Actuarial and Social Protection Consultant at Actuarial-i, guiding policies to strengthen global social security and protection systems. His career is marked by a deep commitment to comprehensive and inclusive social protection systems, reflecting his rigorous actuarial expertise and alignment with international standards, and he actively champions the inclusion of older persons’ rights and issues and gender equality at international fora.
