Centring the Voices of Carers for Canadians Living with Dementia

Care partners and older people living with dementia have unique and varied life experiences. They are diverse groups and must be seen as such in the development of policy, social and public health interventions, and tailored community resources. With increasing numbers of older people across the globe, and the changing nature and form of family and community care networks, now is the time to gain a deeper appreciation of the experiences of caregivers to prioritize improving the lives of current and future generations.

To engage and amplify the voices of caregivers, the IFA conducted semi-structured interviews with caregivers for persons living with dementia, to highlight: their lived experiences as providers of care, what health and community support means to them, the impact they bring to their communities, the resources and supports that they need, the extent to which the resources they access consider their culture, race, gender, class, age, and sexual orientation-based needs, and the importance of their inclusion in the creation of supportive resources.
