Dr. Sandra Timmerman, New York
Dr Sandra Timmermann is a Representative to the United Nations for the International Federation on Ageing and writes the IFA blog, “Live from New York.” She is on the Executive Committee as Recording Secretary for the NGO Committee on Ageing, NY and chaired the 2017 International Day of Older Persons. She has served as IFAs liaison to the UN Department of Global Communications Civil Society Unit, where she organized a briefing on Population Ageing and was a planner and closing speaker at the International Dialogues conference.
Dr Timmermann was presented with the American Society on Aging Award in 2019 for lifetime contributions to research, advocacy and administration in the field of ageing. She has held senior positions in the field of ageing for over 35 years and is nationally recognized for her work in ageing, retirement, and the application to business. Currently, she is Visiting Professor of Gerontology at the American College of Financial Services, a Senior Advisor to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement and consultant to business and non-profits.
From 1997-2013 she was a Vice President at MetLife and the Founder and Director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute, a research and education center on retirement and ageing. Prior to that, she held senior positions at the American Society on Aging (Director of Education), AARP (Director, Institute of Lifetime Learning) and SeniorNet (Director of Education).
A writer and speaker, she is the Financial Gerontology columnist for the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, is on the Editorial Board of Employee Benefits News and has been interviewed by various media including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s, Reuters, Financial Planning, Time-Japan and many others.
Her numerous volunteer leadership roles have included serving as board chair of the National Alliance for Caregiving and the Business Forum on Aging and on the Boards of the American Society on Aging, the American Foundation for the Blind, the National Aging in Place Council and others. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and holds ASA’s Cavanaugh Award for Excellence in Education. She received a BA from the University of Colorado and MA and EdD degrees from Columbia University. Dr Timmermann lives in Fairfield, CT.
