OEWGA Press Release
6 June 2024
14th session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing
As a non-governmental organization (NGO) in attendance at the 14th session of the United Nations Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA), the International Federation on Ageing (IFA) is pleased that a substantive decision on the human rights of older persons was adopted by Member States. Aligning with the IFA’s call to action, which was delivered during opening remarks at the OEWGA, this important decision illustrates a continued commitment to address gaps in the international human rights system regarding the protection of older persons, including highlighting key recommendations such the establishment of a UN convention on the rights of older persons. Show Member States that a convention is a political priority by signing the Global Alliance on the Rights of Older People’s (GAROP) Age with Rights petition here. Much work is still needed to secure a UN convention but this decision at the OEWGA paves a positive way forward! See the IFA’s full press release on the substantive decision below.
